MAKE YOUR BED
A Fundamental Book In The Self Help Genre

Today I read a book that inspired me, Admiral William H. McRaven’s Make Your Bed It’s been on my radar for a while now, and I personally love self-help books. I adore the idea of extracting information that can help me improve myself. At first, I thought I was reading the chapter titles, but I was, admittedly, a little perplexed about how this would help me. I was proven wrong.
What Is It About And Why Is It Any Good?
Make Your Bed is a Self Help book that provides not just useful life advice from a Navy Seal but also a glimpse into the training and perseverance it takes to even get through the brutal training. The way it’s written is very translatable, as McRaven makes the anecdotes of his time in the Navy SEALS relatable to anyone who reads them, translating storeys into everyday events that can happen to anyone. The chapters are short and the book is just over 120 pages or so, making it perfect for people who either don’t have enough time to read a great deal or people who just don’t like reading. This book is easily very inspiring, but even though I read it in a day, it was useful to take notes and think about what was said. This book is very inspiring, but even though I read it in a day, it was useful to take notes and think about what was said.
What Did I learn? (Spoilers)
I personally feel that this book has helped me readjust the methods I use when I try to maintain discipline in my life. The first thing I’ve learned from the book is discipline, and it has made me organise more of my days, allocate time, and persevere, no matter what. The book also reinforced my own philosophy through Mcravens, ideology that seeks to take risks. I believe that a person should aim as high as they can, persist, even if you don’t make that dream come true at the height of your own ambition, you still have achieved a great deal by applying yourself, than those who haven’t. What’s more, it also inspired me to succeed, no matter the risk, I must move forward, never stop and stand on my ground. In the darkest of times, I still have to complete the “mission” of my life, as Mcraven would have said. McRaven further discusses the importance of people throughout his life, how we need people to succeed, how he encourages friendship and an alliance to achieve our goals. As with all the storeys, McRaven demonstrates how his success would not have been possible without the people in his life. The last lesson I learned was how to treat others who are in that dark place with respect but also empowering them, giving hope and strength through the hardest of times. Overall I think this book has a necessary place on peoples book shelves.
Overall, my view is that this book is for anyone who wants to improve themselves, whether it is to set new goals or to persevere in hardship. This book has the possibility of making you feel like you can change the world!
